Identity and Impressions

This series explores letting go and finding meaning in small moments, weaving together my past and future to create personal experiences that feel lasting and timeless. It invites reflection on where we’ve been, while savoring what is still to come.

"Fingers Crossed"

When challenged to create a work of art based on the poem “Experiments” by J.K. Kennedy - what resonated with me was the innocence of childlike creativity and freedom from inhibition. As a child, I spent hours at my parents’ beat-up coffee table with scissors, glue, old magazines, and markers, creating without limits. My father, a cabinet maker until his passing in 2010, surrounded me with the smell and feel of wood, which I brought back by having a wooden frame made for this piece. I began painting with brushes in shades of blue and black but soon dropped them, using only my fingers as I remembered watching my young son's finger-paint with pure joy. That first stroke was difficult, but once I let go, I saw an image emerge that reminded me of a photo from a recent vacation. I worked wet-on-wet, mixing colors with my hands—an uncharacteristically loose process compared to my usual precision-driven style. Finally, in “adult fashion,” I used a tiny brush for finishing details, and with “fingers crossed,” I hope this finger painting brings you joy.

"Linked"

Again using my fingers, I created this piece in a moment of frenzy, thinking about how we are all commonly linked—not as a chain or a burden, but through our ability to find common ground with one another. The goal is to draw us closer together: to dismantle what divides us, not by forcing agreement, but by choosing to see others as human, just like ourselves. There is always something to hold onto—something that grounds us and allows us to connect.

"How Sweet it Is"

Another “adult finger painting,” created in my pursuit of finding beauty in small things. I’m drawn to food, cooking, plants—things I can grow in my garden—and anything rich in color or flavor. These are glimpses of life that take my breath away when I think too deeply about living, about people, and about shared experiences.

This piece embodies that idea. It is simple and small, yet every fingerprint is placed with purpose, creating something out of almost nothing. In the same way food is grown in a garden, or flowers emerge from a stalk as a bud and slowly, majestically unfold before our eyes. My goal is to notice it—to not take it for granted.
